Merino is showing up in more and more children’s clothing. Brands praise its properties, and parents ask two main questions: does merino itch, and how to care for it.<\/p>\n
The answer is neither simple nor the same for every product. Below, we explain what’s truly worth knowing before you buy merino wool clothing for your child.<\/p>\n
Regular sheep’s wool has thicker fibers – about 30-40 microns. Merino comes from Merino sheep, raised primarily in Australia and New Zealand. Its fibers are much finer – 16-24 microns. But it’s not an absolute rule.<\/p>\n It depends. On several things:<\/p>\n Fiber thickness<\/strong>. The finer the fiber – the gentler. Products labeled “extrafine merino” or “superfine merino” have fibers of 16-19 microns. Whether the material feels itchy depends on the specific knit, fiber blend, and individual skin sensitivity.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Knit construction<\/strong>. A loose weave may be more noticeable against the skin than a smooth, dense one. How it’s made matters.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Fiber blend<\/strong>. Pure merino (100%) can feel different from a blend – for example, with added polyamide or elastane, which smooth out the texture.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Individual skin sensitivity<\/strong>. Some children have exceptionally sensitive skin and may feel any kind of wool – even fine merino.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n What does this mean for you?<\/strong> If your child has very sensitive skin, it’s worth buying their first merino garment from a store with a return policy. Check how your child reacts after a short wear. Don’t assume merino will itch – but don’t assume it definitely won’t either.<\/p>\n Both materials are natural, but they work in different situations.<\/p>\n\n
