How to choose the right clothing size for your child
Buying children’s clothing can be trickier than it seems. Children grow fast, size charts vary between brands, and age alone tells you little about whether something will actually fit.
What size should you choose – and is it worth sizing up?
Why age alone isn’t enough
Two three-year-olds can wear completely different sizes. A 5 cm height difference often means a whole size difference. That’s why, when choosing clothing, go primarily by:
- your child’s height – the most important measurement for sizing,
- chest circumference – especially for sweaters and hoodies,
- sleeve and leg length – for leggings, trousers, and knee-length shorts,
- head circumference – for hats and sun hats.
On Meadow’s Tale clothing labels, you’ll find age markings – for example 2-3Y – but underneath are specific measurements. Age is a starting point, not the final answer. If you’re wondering how to dress your child for a walk depending on the weather, size matters there too.
Sweaters – oversized or fitted?
Meadow’s Tale sweaters have an oversized cut. That’s important – the relaxed fit gives you room and lets the garment be worn longer, even as your child grows.
How to choose a sweater size?
- Measure your child’s height and compare it with the table below.
- If your child is between two sizes – go with the larger one. The oversized cut won’t look too big.
- The sweater should be comfortable – it shouldn’t restrict movement or ride up when raising arms.
Is it worth buying a larger size for later?
With an oversized cut – yes. A sweater in size 2-3Y can last a whole season, even as your child grows. However, if the sleeves are too long and get in the way of play – it’s better to go with the smaller size.
Leggings and trousers – flexibility matters
Meadow’s Tale merino leggings have suspenders and an elastic waistband. This means they:
- conform to your child’s body,
- don’t slip down during movement,
- have adjustable suspenders that give margin as your child grows.
How to check if leggings fit?
Your child should be able to freely squat and kick their legs. If the fabric pulls tight across the thighs or waist – the size is too small.
Cotton trousers have a wider cut and an elastic waistband. They’re more forgiving than leggings. If your child wears size 2-3Y in leggings, trousers in the same size will usually fit too.
Vest – how should it fit?
A merino vest should be fitted but not tight. It should:
- hug the torso without gaping,
- not restrict arm movement,
- leave room for a thin layer underneath.
A vest that’s too loose won’t trap heat. One that’s too tight restricts movement. Check if your child can freely wrap their arms around themselves.
Hats and sun hats – head circumference
The Meadow’s Tale balaclava hat is stretchy. Size 2-4Y was designed for children in that age range, but it’s worth measuring head circumference.
How to measure head circumference?
With a fabric measuring tape – above the ears, across the middle of the forehead. If the measurement falls within the manufacturer’s range – the size is right.
Hand-crocheted sun hats have a less stretchy circumference. If your child is on the edge of size 2-4Y – check that the hat doesn’t fall over their eyes and isn’t too tight.

Sizing for a gift – how to get it right
Buying clothing for a friend’s or relative’s child? Don’t know the exact height? A few rules – these also work when choosing a practical gift for a one-year-old:
Choose a size with room to grow. If the child is 2 years old, choose 2-3Y – not 1-2Y. The garment will be worn longer.
Go for an elastic cut. Leggings, oversized sweaters, and vests are more forgiving than rigid-cut garments.
Keep the receipt. Even the best-chosen size may not fit – that’s normal.
Most common mistakes
Going by the child’s age alone. A two-year-old wearing size 3-4Y is nothing unusual.
Buying “to grow into” with fitted-cut garments. Oversized – yes. Tight leggings – no.
Ignoring the size chart. Every brand has its own sizing. Compare the measurements.
Trying on only one type of garment. A sweater may fit in 2-3Y, but leggings in the same size may not. Check each category separately.
