Merino for children - does it itch, how to wash, what to look for

Parenting

Merino is showing up in more and more children’s clothing. Brands praise its properties, and parents ask two main questions: does merino itch, and how to care for it.

The answer is neither simple nor the same for every product. Below, we explain what’s truly worth knowing before you buy merino wool clothing for your child.

How is merino different from regular wool?

Regular sheep’s wool has thicker fibers – about 30-40 microns. Merino comes from Merino sheep, raised primarily in Australia and New Zealand. Its fibers are much finer – 16-24 microns. For comparison – organic cotton, which we use for our sweaters, has different properties and works in different conditions. For guidance on how to dress your child for a walk at various temperatures, see our separate guide.

What does this mean in practice?

  • A thinner fiber is more flexible and less stiff.
  • It doesn’t “prick” mechanically the way traditional wool does.
  • The material feels smoother and drapes better.

That’s why merino is often described as wool that doesn’t itch. But it’s not an absolute rule.

Does merino itch?

It depends. On several things:

  • Fiber thickness. The finer the fiber – the gentler. Products labeled “extrafine merino” or “superfine merino” have fibers of 16-19 microns. Whether the material feels itchy depends on the specific knit, fiber blend, and individual skin sensitivity.

  • Knit construction. A loose weave may be more noticeable against the skin than a smooth, dense one. How it’s made matters.

  • Fiber blend. Pure merino (100%) can feel different from a blend – for example, with added polyamide or elastane, which smooth out the texture.

  • Individual skin sensitivity. Some children have exceptionally sensitive skin and may feel any kind of wool – even fine merino.

What does this mean for you? If your child has very sensitive skin, it’s worth buying their first merino garment from a store with a return policy. Check how your child reacts after a short wear. Don’t assume merino will itch – but don’t assume it definitely won’t either.

Merino or cotton – which to choose?

Both materials are natural, but they work in different situations.

When to choose merino? When you need a layer that warms during low activity but doesn’t overheat when your child starts moving. It’s great for walks, trips, and changeable weather.

When to choose cotton? For everyday wear, at home, in summer. It’s simpler to care for – no hand washing or special products needed.

How to wash merino clothing?

Merino needs gentler treatment than cotton. The information below comes from the Meadow’s Tale product pages listed in this article. For other garments, always check the care label on the specific product.

According to the manufacturer’s instructions:

  1. Washing doesn’t need to be frequent. Merino wool has self-cleaning properties – simply air out the garment after use.

  2. When needed: wash very gently, by hand, in lukewarm water (around 30°C).

  3. Do not use detergents.

  4. Do not use a tumble dryer.

  5. Drying: flat, away from radiators and direct sunlight.

  6. Ironing: at medium temperature, up to 110°C maximum.

Merino products at Meadow’s Tale

Several pieces in our collection use merino wool. Here they are:

  • Merino leggings (90% merino, 9% polyamide, 1% elastane): year-round, with suspenders. Polyamide strengthens the structure, elastane adds stretch. They work as a base layer under trousers or on their own on warmer days.

  • Merino vest (100% extrafine merino): a light layer that regulates temperature. Works as extra warmth under a jacket or on its own at 10-15°C.

  • Merino knee-length shorts (composition similar to the leggings): for summer and physical activity. Short, don’t restrict movement – great for balance bikes, running, the playground.

Each of these products has slightly different properties – not just because of the material, but also the cut and knit thickness.

Checklist: merino care

Cut it out and keep it by the washing machine:

  • [ ] Only wash when needed – air out first
  • [ ] Hand wash in lukewarm water (around 30°C)
  • [ ] Do not use detergents
  • [ ] Do not use a tumble dryer
  • [ ] Dry flat, away from heat
  • [ ] Iron at maximum 110°C
  • [ ] Airing out is enough – the material cleans itself

Most common mistakes

  1. Washing merino with cotton on a regular cycle. This is the fastest way to ruin the garment. The fibers will felt and the size will shrink.

  2. Using fabric softener. It weighs down the fibers and reduces breathability.

  3. Wringing and line drying. Wet merino is heavy – it stretches under its own weight. Always dry flat.

  4. Washing too infrequently. While merino doesn’t need frequent washing, stains – mud, food – need to be removed. Don’t put off washing indefinitely.

Frequently asked questions

Can I machine wash merino?
We recommend hand washing. Merino doesn’t need detergents – lukewarm water is enough. If you use a washing machine, choose the gentlest wool cycle, without detergent, and place the garment in a mesh laundry bag.

Is merino suitable for summer?
Thin merino – yes. Knee-length shorts or a thin merino t-shirt can be a breathable option for warm days. Thicker leggings work better in autumn and winter.

How long does merino take to dry?
Usually about a day. Dry flat on a towel – the towel will absorb excess moisture.
